Artist Statement
My ceramic sculptures feature slab-built geometric forms and are inspired by my background in graphic design and interest in modern architecture. A limited palette of three different clays, one of which is sourced from my Sydney garden, remain unglazed, highlighting the simplicity and minimal aesthetic of each form. I use iron rich clay from my garden primarily as a slip and apply it over another clay body. The result is a deep tan colour when fired.
My sculptures can be viewed as stand-alone individual pieces or when multiple elements are arranged, an interplay between the open and closed forms and negative spaces occur, presenting a different dynamic with each iteration.
This interaction between form and space can be seen in the Ruminations series, where the proximity of the geometric forms to each other simulate the shifting dynamics that take place when a group of people are having a conversation. The shapes within shapes allude to our inner monologue and mindfulness as we endeavour to achieve balance and contentment in our lives. Further connections are expressed using delicate inlayed lines, threading one form to the next, emulating our search for meaningful relationships and inner peace.
