Bio
Debbey Watson came to ceramics from a background in graphic design, working across Sydney, Canberra and London. The connecting point has been a fascination with material and form, and has emerged into a rigorous sculptural ceramic practice. She has the satisfaction of using clay sourced from her Sydney garden in addition to commercial clays. In 2017 she graduated from the National Art School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
In 2021 Watson was a finalist in numerous competitions including the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize 20th Anniversary with her Ruminations series, the National Emerging Art Prize and the Little Things Art Prize. In 2020 she was a finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize and awarded Highly Commended at the Blacktown City Art Prize. The Ruminations series features open and closed forms with linear connections providing a geometric interpretation of social interactions. Also, in 2020 Watson was awarded 2nd Prize in the ceramic section in the Little Things Art Prize and a finalist in the Muswellbrook Art Prize. In 2019 and 2022 she was a finalist in the North Sydney Art Prize.
In 2018 Watson attended a ceramic residency in Rome, producing a body of work, Floor Rising, inspired by the mosaic patterns of Roman Medieval church floors and alluding to architectural deterioration. She has exhibited in Rome, Sydney, Melbourne and metropolitan galleries.
